First National HIV/AIDS Strategy Introduced!

Yesterday, the Obama Administration revealed the First National HIV/AIDS Strategy. After nearly three decades, since the introduction of the disease in the United States, this strategy is an effort to re-focus domestic public attention on ending the HIV/AIDS virus.

By implementing this plan the Obama Adminstration hopes to decrease the amount of HIV infections and provide access to high quality health care, to those infected, that is absent of discrimination. To do so, the NHAS is comprised of a comprehensive plan that has three primary goals:

  • Reducing the number of new infections;
  • Increasing access to care and optimizing health outcomes for people living with HIV; and
  • Reducing HIV-related health disparities.

After the strategy was revealed, President Obama addressed the new plan, previous HIV/AIDS research and education, “The question is not whether or not we know what to do, but whether or not we will do it.”

Since March 2009, when The Red Pump Project was founded we have used social media to bring awareness to the issue of HIV/AIDS. Through fund raising efforts we helped to support other HIV/AIDS service organizations both locally and across the country through our Ambassador Program. As President Obama stated, “Our ability to combat HIV/AIDS doesn’t rest on government alone.” Yesterday’s call to action was a request for continued commitment and an increase in service that reaffirms what we seek to do at Red Pump.

Through educational conferences, community outreach, and organizational partnerships we will continue the work of our mission; to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS. As noted in Obama’s address, we cannot afford to rely on any single prevention method. In the wake of this National HIV/AIDS Strategy Red Pump promises to continue to do the work to spread the message of prevention that rests in education, safe sex practices, and open dialogue about the issues that surround sexual and reproductive health.
