“There are approximately 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. & almost 280,000 are women.” – CDC

On January 18, 2012, The Red Pump Project will launch its 4th annual Rock the Red Pump™ campaign. It’s an initiative to commemorate National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD), which is March 10th every year. In fact, that’s how Red Pump got started almost 3 years ago!

The Rock the Red Pump™ campaign’s goal is to generate conversation in blogosphere about the issue of HIV/AIDS and how it affects women. In the 50 days leading up to March 10th, Red Pump asks bloggers to place one of the campaign badges on their websites to represent the strength and courage of women fighting HIV/AIDS or affected by the disease. Then on NWGHAAD, people across blogosphere dedicate their posts to talking about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. Also, put on your favorite pair of red shoes on NWGHAAD and be fierce!

Our last campaign, we had a goal of getting 500 bloggers, but we more than doubled it and got over 1,200 blogs to Rock the Red Pump™! This year, our goal is to get 2,500 bloggers to join us in raising awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 50 days leading up to NWGHAAD. Well, this year, we’d like to paint blogosphere red on March 9, 2012, a Friday. And then on March 10th, we’ll be having events in cities across the country. Details to come on those!

We’re so excited to have BlogHer, the biggest community of women bloggers join us as a supporter for a 2nd year in a row!

Help is kick off our campaign on January 18, 2012! You’ll be able to sign up and grab a badge of your choice that day. We’re really looking forward to being 2,500 strong on March 9, 2012!

In January 2010, Pepsi launched The Pepsi Refresh Project. This initiative, aimed at encouraging individuals to make a positive impact on their communities, plans to award over $20 million this year to ideas that “refresh” the world. Each month, the project takes 1,000 submissions and the best submissions, based off public voting, will receive grants from $5,000 to $250,000.

In August 2010, T.E.A.M. HIV/AIDS (Teens Empowering Awareness Movement) submitted an application to be considered for a $50,000 grant. Started by two 15 year old girls from Komono, Indiana, who were directly affected by HIV due their parent’s infection, T.E.A.M HIV/AIDS goes from state to state educating other teenagers about this disease.

Their proposal to The Pepsi Refresh Project identifies three goals:

* Educate over 100,000 teens across the USA about HIV/AIDS;
* Provide teens a voice through real life video documentation; and
* Reduce the number of teens in the U.S. contracting HIV/AIDS.

It is their hope that with the grant money, they will be able to continue their state to state travels and create a documentary of their experiences educating their peers. T.E.A.M. HIV/AIDS acknowledges the 45,000 or so young people ages 13 – 24 diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. at the end of 2007. The documentary created will be used to “educate American teens through the telling of real-life experiences…and letting the voices of many youths be heard.” In essence, T.E.A.M HIV/AIDS will create a nationwide support campaign for teenagers.

The spread of HIV/AIDS within our teenage communities necessitates the dialogue free of judgment and stigma that T.E.A.M. HIV/AIDS hopes to foster among their peers.

Washington D.C. – HIV infection amongst women is nearly 12 times the national rate in the District of Columbia. With the launch of DC Doin’ It!, a grassroots campaign to encourage the use of female condoms, The Washington AIDS Partnership hopes to increase awareness while decreasing HIV infections. The Washington AIDS Partnership, a collaboration of grantmaking organizations that leads an effective private-sector response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, will begin the campaign tomorrow. Across the DC, 460 Metro busses will be adorned with advertisements and posters and brochures will be distributed by community partners.

A collaborative effort between The Washington AIDS Partnership, the District Department of Health, the MAC AIDS Fund, CVS/pharmacy and local organizations, the campaign is geared towards adults ages 20 to 60. Based off results from focus groups conducted with that age range, the advertisements for this campaign will incorporate sexual pleasure, intimacy, and women’s empowerment with their message of HIV prevention. An ad with a young couple embracing will have the tagline “The female condom has pleasure points for her and him to tease, please, and protect. Get turned on to it.” Channing Wickham, Executive Director of the Washington AIDS Partnership, calls DC Doin’ It! “a campaign that seeks to change social norms and save lives.”

A montage of campaign ads to be featured across the District of Columbia. Photo: DC Doin’ It!

All across DC, more than 40,000 free female condoms have been distributed to date, with over more than 450,000 to be handed out by the end of the year. The campaign has also trained over 40 peer educators, while conducting almost 4,000 educational sessions with information about the condoms. In another method to increase FC2 access, CVS/pharmacy has made the condom available in all of their stores in the District. The cost for a three pack of female condoms is $6.49.

Every year, the United States recognizes March 10th as National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It’s a nationwide initiative to raise awareness about the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women & girls and encourages ladies to take action. While progress has definitely been made in the areas of AIDS prevention and treatment, women still represent 27% of all new AIDS diagnoses, with African-American women accounting for 66% of that group. This year focuses on this statistic, “Every 35 minutes, a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States.”

In observance of this day, The Red Pump Project is asking bloggers to participate in the second annual “Rock the Red Pump” campaign: 500 in 50. Last year, 135 of you took to Twitter, Facebook, and your blogs to help us “Rock the Red Pump” and this year, we’re asking you to do it again! This time, we have a goal of getting 500 blogs to “Rock the Red Pump,” and we have 50 days to do it.

Leading up to March 10th, we’re asking bloggers to “Rock the Red Pump” widget on their sidebars to represent the strength and courage of women fighting HIV/AIDS or affected by the disease both directly and indirectly. Then on NWGHAAD, we would like you to embed the Red Pump Widget within a post with a short snippet of its significance, including some statistics about HIV/AIDS and its effect on women and girls.

Besides, the Red Pump will add a touch of FIERCE to your already FABULOUS blogs! We want you to join The Red Pump Project and help spread awareness of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. To sign up to participate, please send an email to rocktheredpump@theredpumpproject.com. If you sign up, we will send you instructions, statistics and the HTML code for the widget.

Also, your blog will be linked on a post that will run on the following pages: The Red Pump homepage, Awesomely Luvvie and The Fabulous Giver on that day.

If you’re interested in participating in the “Rock the Red Pump” campaign, please send an email to rocktheredpump@theredpumpproject.com. If you’re already “Rocking the Red Pump” on your sidebar, please send us an email anyway. We’ve created a brand new widget for 2010!

Thank you for your support of The Red Pump Project and we look forward to rocking 500 strong on March 10, 2010!

Regards,

Team Red Pump
